Summary

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

If you haven’t read this book and are still considering reading it then I recommend you pick it up before continuing so that you are not spoiled!

Discussion

- I'm so conflicted about this series I feel like I have a love hate relationship with it! I love all the action, adventure, and romance but at times I felt there wasn't a good balance between the three. I got to book 5 (which I know is literally the end well for now) and I stopped midway through because I was just so bored! Although to be fair it may have just been due to some of the chapters that I felt were boring.

- I'd definitely change all the going back and forth between characters! I felt that was one of the main reasons I stopped reading as I would get reeled in to one story then I had to change and adapt once again. I get that this is to keep the reader interested but it was a bit much for me.

- I will certainly continue the series but at a later date as right now I don't feel I'd be able to get through it.

Final thoughts

- Since I loved the ACOTAR series so much I decided to start reading these as I thought that they would be comparable, and although they were similar in some ways there weren't in others. Although I did DNF this series that doesn't mean it will stay that way forever I do plan to continue the series at a later date as I am a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas! I did quite enjoy the first few books and I feel that if I power through the 5th book I will be very happy. How did you all feel about this series? Did you love it? Or did you have a love hate relationship with it as well?
