Very action packed with sadly even less romance, but it actually really worked for me.

Summary

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control. The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind. Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors. But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat. Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever? The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

Discussion

Right off the bat this book kicks off with an insane amount of action as we see Mare and her friends escape from the bowl of bones. They are immediately greeted with an army of Mavens silvers and reds (whom are being used as a human shield for the silvers). I was extremely happy to see that the Scarlet Guard have many tricks up their sleeve as well as many contacts.

This makes me feel like Mare and the others like her might actually stand a chance against Maven and the evil silvers. Although I would like to point out that the fact that the Scarlet Guard keeps so many secrets kinda puts me on edge (I almost feel like I should keep a close eye on them). That may be because its easier for them in case one of the members gets caught their whole plan will still be secret but I’m just a little weary of them.

One of the parts in this book that really frustrated me was when Kilorn betrays (or so I thought) Mare and gets her locked in a cell with Cal while in Tuck. My one and only thought throughout was “Kilorn I’m so close to kicking your butt has Mare not be betrayed enough and now you too!” But he really redeems himself when he tricks the Colonel and frees Mare, Cal, and Farley from their cells (he really had me fooled). Also, what happened to the chemistry between Mare and Cal it completely disappeared. I mean I know they would comfort each other but that was really all it was it almost felt like Mare was just using him for his comfort.

My heart hurt so much when Mare finds the dead baby on one of her outings and along with it a note from Maven. At this point I was so angry with Maven mostly because I’m still rooting for him but also because what the heck why Maven? Why can’t you just be the boy you were before why all the murder? My heart was breaking for Mare so much while she would secretly read Mavens letters being as terrible as they were she still loves the person she thought he was (so do I!)

The worst and best part in this book is when Mare murders Queen Elara while freeing newbloods and silvers alike from Corros Prison. Although this was cause to celebrate because now Maven doesn’t have his manipulating mother at his side we find out that Shade has been murdered as well. I literally cried in the chapters where Mare is trying her best to cope with the loss of her brother, and the guilt and shame of all the others lost as well.

I really hate the fact that everyone seems to see Mare as a “bad” person when in reality she is trying so hard to be as “good” as she possibly can be considering the circumstances.

I can definitely understand her struggle with doing what she thinks is best and doing what others deem the best. The ending really had me on the edge of my seat from the moment they are ripped from the sky all the way to where Mare strikes a bargain with Maven to keep her friends safe. I was screaming along with the other characters as much as I love Maven for all his faults I felt terrible for Mare to have to endure his evils. I can’t even begin to image what Maven has in store for Mare with his last words in the book being “You put her body on display.” “I’ll do the same to you.”

Final Thoughts

Overall I really liked this book I was a little disappointed that there was even less romance (who would have thought that possible) in this book but surprisingly I feel it really worked for this book. There was definitely a large amount of action which for me really made me enjoy the book all the more (mostly because it was too hectic for me to even think about anything romantic). This book has really changed the way I see Mare but not for the worst I feel like I love her character even more so now. She has evolved into an even better character than I could have ever thought I definitely admire her strong will. I believe this book will again like the last really appeal to those of you whom really enjoy a good action packed book with little to no romance.

Hope you enjoyed this review! I can’t wait to read the third installment of this series Kings Cage be sure to stay tuned for a review on that book as well. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite parts of the story were, how do you feel about Cal and Maven now? Are you still #teamMaven or #teamCal? Hate me if you must but I’m still #teamMaven in know I’m some kind of sicko but my heart just can’t help itself, I honestly feel like he has to be redeemable in some way. Also let me know if there are any books you’d like to recommend that you think I’d enjoy reading.
